Here are 9 changes to the way the Grammy Awards will work in 2023

The Recording Academy has added five new categories to the Grammy Awards for 2023. This is the most categories added in a single year in 28 years.

Non-classical songwriting award
This category honours non-performing, non-producing songwriters' written excellence, vocation, and art.

Best alternative song

This category acknowledges creative excellence in an alternative performance that supports growth and innovation in music and attitudes.

Best Americana song

"This category acknowledges excellence in performances of Americana music," the Academy notes.

Best game and interactive media score

The Academy adds, "This Category acknowledges excellence in score soundtrack albums made mostly of original soundtracks for a  video game or interactive media."

Best spoken word album

This category celebrates spoken word poetry albums, claims the Academy.Instructional recordings and spoken word albums with or without music are eligible.

New award: best social change song

The Academy notes, "This category will honour message-driven music with worldwide influence."

Voting update: extra entry fees

All Recording Academy members receive five courtesy entries annually. Extra entries cost $40, $75 , or $125. Media businesses pay $65 , $95, or $125 per entry.

Album eligibility update

"To be eligible for Grammy nomination, an album must contain more than 75% new, unpublished songs," says the Academy. Previously, 50% was required.
